Ilona is passionate about conflict resolution, including mediation, investigations, and coaching. It lets her draw on her natural empathy for all sides to help resolve difficult, painful problems in a way that provides all the participants the dignity, respect, and care that enables them to be heard and, ultimately, to heal.

Experience

Ilona’s work includes investigations across a variety of industries such as tech, nonprofit, and government agencies. She has investigated cases involving CEOs, executive directors, and elected officials. She also investigates complaints that arise at K-12 schools and universities and serves as a Title IX hearing officer.

Ilona has extensive experience with labor and employment law and Title IX, having spent 12 years litigating civil rights cases. She served as the legal director for the national Transgender Law Center from 2012-2017. Prior to that, she was a staff attorney at the National Center for Lesbian Rights and an associate at the labor law firm of Cohen, Weiss and Simon in New York. Ilona also worked for the California State Assembly and as a lobbyist for Equality California.

Ilona left the world of litigation and started her neutral practice in 2018, working as a mediator and labor arbitrator in addition to conducting investigations. She currently serves on the mediation panels for the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California and California’s Department of Fair Employment and Housing and several arbitration panels.

Ilona has authored numerous articles and book chapters on sex discrimination and LGBT legal issues and frequently speaks about those topics. She has taught as an adjunct professor at Stanford Law School and the University of California, Berkeley. Ilona is an active member of the Association of Workplace Investigators (AWI). She serves on the editorial board for the AWI Journal and regularly serves as faculty for AWI’s investigator trainings. She is also active in the Bar Association of San Francisco (BASF), serving on the Executive Committee for the Labor and Employment Law Section, where she is currently Vice Chair. She was previously Co-Chair of the BASF LGBT Equality Committee.

Outside the Office

Ilona is an amateur musician, playing a little piano, mandolin, guitar and ukulele, and singing in choirs. She divides her time between Oakland and the redwood forests of Sonoma County.
