Are female-led law firms different than those led by men?
Since women are underrepresented at the highest levels of the legal profession, female-led firms still stand out as a bit of a diversity anomaly. As attorneys who investigate and study organizational dynamics on a daily basis, we wondered how gender dynamics might (or might not) play a role in leadership effectiveness within the legal profession.
To explore this question we conducted a non-scientific survey of our own, very diverse firm. We asked attorneys and staff to respond to the question “Do female-led law firms differ from traditional law firms?” We received some interesting responses, with team members noting various aspects of decision making, professional support and supervision, work/life balance and perceptions around feeling comfortable bringing their “whole selves” to work.
