AB 2193 – Schools on the Hook for Hazing Accountability

Jan 08, 2025

New year, new laws. Each year the Daily Journal publishes a special supplement dedicated to California’s new laws.

For this year’s supplement, OIG attorney investigators Madeline Buitelaar and Gorev Ahuja contributed a piece that discusses AB 2193, which creates new civil penalties and increases institutional accountability for hazing.

Even if the educational institution was not directly involved, if it should have known about the activity and failed to take appropriate steps, it may face liability.

This new law places significant burden on educational institutions to implement robust anti-hazing programs and to investigate where there are any concerns or claims of hazing. The full article, “AB 2193: Schools on the Hook for Hazing Accountability,” can be found on the Daily Journal website (although a subscription is required). If you do not have a subscription and have questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out to Madeline, Gorev or your usual OIG contact.
